Can ChatGPT convert an image to DWG?

No, not in any way you can hand to a CAD user. ChatGPT can describe a floor plan and write code, but it cannot return a DWG, and a DXF it scripts from a picture is rarely usable. Here is what it can do, what it cannot, and what to use instead.

Updated

Short answer: no. ChatGPT cannot give you a DWG file, and it cannot reliably turn a picture of a floor plan into CAD linework. It can read the plan, explain it, and write code or commands for you, but the conversion itself needs a raster-to-vector tool.

That is not a knock on ChatGPT. Tracing an image into clean CAD geometry is a narrow, fiddly job, and general chatbots are not built for it.

What ChatGPT can't do

TaskCan ChatGPT do it?Why
Return a DWG fileNoDWG is Autodesk's closed binary format, and ChatGPT has no writer for it.
Turn a floor plan image into clean, editable wallsNot reliablySeeing roughly where the walls are is one thing; producing closed, straight, snapped polylines on proper layers is another, and a one-off script rarely gets there.
Open the result in CAD to check itNoIt cannot see the drawing the way AutoCAD shows it, so it cannot spot gaps, doubled lines or the wrong scale.
Keep the drawing to scaleOnly if you give it the numbersIt can compute a scale from a dimension you tell it, but the geometry still has to come from somewhere.

What ChatGPT can do

  • Read the plan. Upload the image and ask it to list the rooms, read the dimensions and describe the layout. Handy for checking a converter's TEXT layer, too.
  • Explain the formats. It answers questions like DWG vs DXF vs PDF well.
  • Write commands and scripts. AutoLISP routines, AutoCAD command sequences, or a Python script with the ezdxf library to draw rooms from dimensions you type in.
  • Draft simple geometry from numbers. If you give it the room sizes, it can script a basic DXF of rectangles. That is drawing from a spec, not converting your image, and you still have to check every line.

Why a script from a chatbot falls short

Suppose ChatGPT has its code tool and you ask it to "convert this floor plan to DXF". The usual result is one of two things. Either it runs a generic edge or contour trace, which gives you the outline of every stroke (two lines per wall, broken at every door, with text and furniture mixed in), or it guesses a handful of rectangles from what it sees. Neither is a drawing you can dimension.

A dedicated tracer spends its effort on exactly the parts a quick script skips: measuring wall thickness, separating walls from thin lines, straightening and snapping walls to each other, finding door swings, and sorting everything onto layers. Even then the output is a starting point, not a finished drawing.

We make ImageToDWG, so we are not neutral. Here is what it does and does not do, from its own code: it reads JPG, PNG and WebP (not PDF), traces walls into closed polylines on a WALLS layer, puts door swings on DOORS, centre lines on WALL_AXIS, text read by an AI vision model on TEXT and the rest on OTHER, and lets you set the scale from one length you know. It handles clean black-and-white plans best; hatched or double-line walls, angled photos and curved walls are weak spots. See the Scan2CAD comparison for a longer side-by-side.

A workflow that uses both

  1. Upload your floor plan image to a tracer and check the preview.
  2. Set the scale from one dimension you trust.
  3. Download the DXF, open it in your CAD program and save it as DWG.
  4. If you want a second opinion on room names or dimensions, give the original image to ChatGPT and compare its reading with the TEXT layer.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT create a DWG file?

No. DWG is AutoCAD's closed binary format and ChatGPT has no tool that writes it. At most it can write a DXF with code, which AutoCAD can then save as DWG.

Can ChatGPT turn a floor plan image into a DXF?

Only roughly. When its code tool is available it may write a Python script that traces the picture into a DXF, but the result is usually broken outlines or a few hand-placed rectangles, not walls you can build on, and it cannot open the file in CAD to check it.

What is ChatGPT actually good at here?

Reading the plan: listing rooms, reading dimension text, explaining the layout, estimating areas from labelled dimensions, and writing or explaining AutoCAD commands, AutoLISP or Python scripts. Use it alongside a converter, not instead of one.

What should I use instead?

A raster-to-vector tool built for drawings: an online floor plan tracer such as ImageToDWG for quick wall layouts, Scan2CAD or AutoCAD's Raster Design toolset for heavier scanning work, or tracing over the image by hand in AutoCAD.

Can ChatGPT check the DXF I got from a converter?

It can read a DXF uploaded as a file and report layers, entity counts or extents if its code tool is available, which is a useful sanity check. It cannot show you the drawing the way a CAD viewer does.
