Convert a scanned blueprint to CAD

Scan or photograph the sheet, upload the image and get the walls back as straight, closed polylines, with door swings, centre lines and the plan’s text on separate layers. Flat scans of dark lines on light paper work best.

Accepts JPG, PNG or WebP scans · outputs layered DXF for AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight and LibreCAD

No plan at hand?

How it works

  1. Step 1

Scan the sheet flat at 200–300 DPI, or take a straight-on photo.

  2. Step 2

Upload the scan and check the traced walls in the preview.

  3. Step 3

Measure one dimension you know to set the scale.

  4. Step 4

Download the DXF and open it in AutoCAD.

What converts well

You get an editable wall layout to build on, not a finished construction drawing. Here is what to expect.

Works best

Black-and-white floor plans, scans and line drawings: walls come out closed, straight and on their own layer.

Works, with cleanup

Hand sketches and colour renderings: you get the walls, plus extra fixture lines on the OTHER layer to delete.

Not yet

Angled phone photos with strong perspective, very low-resolution images and curved walls.

Quick facts

What you get before you upload anything.

Input filesJPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP images: floor plans, scans, screenshots and photos of drawings. PDF is not accepted yet; export the PDF page as a PNG first.
Output fileDXF in AutoCAD 2010 format. You download DXF, not DWG; any program that reads DWG opens it, and AutoCAD saves it as DWG with Save As.
Opens in AutoCAD?Yes. Open the DXF directly in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT, or in BricsCAD, DraftSight and LibreCAD.
File sizePick images up to 25 MB. Your browser shrinks larger ones to at most 3,000 px on the long edge and 4 MB before uploading; tracing runs at about 2,000 px.
PriceThe preview is free and needs no account. Downloads need a free account: 3 free downloads on signup (valid 30 days), then 1 credit per download, in packs of 10 for $9.99 or 50 for $29.99.
LayersWALLS (closed wall polylines), WALLS_HATCH (wall fill), WALL_AXIS (centre lines), DOORS (swing arcs), TEXT (room names and dimensions read from the image) and OTHER (every other line).
ScaleMeasure one line on the preview and enter its real length in ft, in, m or mm. Signed in, you can instead use the scale read from the plan’s dimension text when those dimensions agree. Otherwise the drawing is in pixels.
AccuracyRule-based tracing, not hand drafting. Horizontal and vertical walls are straightened and snapped to each other; diagonal walls are kept but not straightened, and curved walls become short straight segments. Door swings are found by shape, so some are missed and some round letters become false arcs.
LimitsWalls must be the thickest dark strokes. Hatched walls, walls drawn as two thin lines and coloured walls end up on OTHER. Photos with strong perspective are only rotated, not flattened. Text is read by an AI vision model and can be wrong or missing.
PrivacyImages are processed in memory to make your file and we do not store them. To read the text on a plan, the image is also sent to an AI vision model through fal.ai.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on real blue blueprints?

Not directly. The tracer looks for dark lines on a light background, so a classic blueprint with white lines on blue paper comes out empty. Invert the scan and make it greyscale in any image editor first, then upload it. Whiteprints and modern black-on-white plots work as they are.

What scan resolution should I use?

For a letter, A4 or A3 sheet, 200 to 300 DPI is plenty. Higher resolutions are shrunk to 3,000 px on the long edge before upload anyway, so a huge scan does not add detail.

My scan is crooked. Is that a problem?

Small rotations are fine: the plan is straightened automatically before tracing. Strong perspective from a phone photo taken at an angle is not corrected, so shoot straight down or use a scanner app that flattens the page.

What kind of images convert best?

Black-and-white floor plans, scans and clean line drawings give the best result: walls come out as closed, straight polylines. Colour renderings with furniture and floor textures still give you the walls, but expect extra lines on the OTHER layer that you will want to delete.

Is the result a finished CAD drawing?

No. You get an editable wall layout to trace over or build on, not a construction drawing. It saves the hours of redrawing walls by hand; dimensions, annotations and details are still yours to add.

How do I get the real-world scale right?

Measure one wall or dimension line on the preview and type its real length, for example 25 ft, and the drawing is scaled so that measurement matches. When you are signed in, the converter also reads the dimension text on the plan and offers that scale if the dimensions agree with each other. Without either, the file is drawn in pixels.

Which layers are in the file?

WALLS holds the wall outlines as closed polylines, WALLS_HATCH a solid fill of the walls, WALL_AXIS the wall centre lines, DOORS the door swings, TEXT the room names and dimensions read from the image, and OTHER everything else the tracer found, such as fixtures and furniture. Turn OTHER off for a clean wall plan.

Do you keep my images?

Uploads are processed in memory to make your file and are not stored.
